School workshops

In partnership with London Festival Opera

LFO believes it is crucial to encourage the next generation of music lovers at the grass roots level, particularly in areas where performances are not readily available.

Opera Magic is a joyous introduction to the world of opera that can inspire, entertain and educate children from all backgrounds via a programme of drama, humour, passion and audience interaction that ensures a positive and memorable first time at the opera.

Classical Vauxhall is working with Lambeth Music Services to offer Opera Magic to local children aged 5-11. If your school would like to take part, please email info@vauxhallone.co.uk.

Guided Walk: Astronauts, Aeronauts, Animals & Agents

Astronauts, Aeronauts, and Animals and Agents feature in this 60-minute walk exploring Vauxhall and the links between classical music and the cinema.

You’ll hear about music that has been sent into outer space, used to depict the exploration of space, and to portray fictional Victorian adventurers aboard air balloons. We’ll discuss the classical influence on the scores of action movies and TV shows, and uncover links to music from films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth, Star Wars, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Around the World in Eighty Days, Fantasia, Animal Farm, Jack Ryder and James Bond.

Fairytale and Fantasy

Fiachra Garvey (piano)

The concert “Fairytale and Fantasy” will feature music that’s inspired by mythical events. Two of the featured works are some of Fiachra’s all-time favourites, Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and Stravinsky’s Petrushka. These two incredibly virtuosic, yet also musically enriching works bring to life sea nymphs and love-struck puppets.

This will be followed by the Gaelic Fantasy by Irish composer Rhoda Coghill and British’s composer Frank Bridge’s A Fairy Tale; as well as two of classical music’s “Top of the Pop’s” favourites in Debussy’s La Cathédrale Engloutie and Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

#UriPosteJukebox

Elena Urioste (violin)

Tom Poster (piano)

Elena Urioste and Tom Poster gave a glorious recital for Classical Vauxhall in our 2021 Behind Closed Doors online festival. It was incredible to have them as part of the festival at that time but without an audience, it all just felt a bit wrong. We are thrilled to have them back with us in a much warmer atmosphere! They begin their recital with sonatas by Mendelssohn and Melanie Bonis. These two sonatas are quite neglected and rarely performed, something Elena and Tom are passionate about remedying in their programmes. Their second half #UriPosteJuxebox will feature a smorgasbord of greatest hits from their hugely successful online YouTube channel, which was their brainchild during the days of Covid lockdowns. Expect everything from Bach to Elton John.

Classical Soul

China Moses (soul/jazz vocalist) / Tony Tixier (piano) / Jasen Weaver (double bass) / Heloise Lefebvre (violin) / Guillaume Bongiraud (cello)

China Moses is an icon of the Jazz world, as a singer and songwriter she is a trailblazer in every respect. She commands the stage from the moment she makes her entrance” (The Times). In “Classical Soul” she will perform all of her own original music, featuring hits from albums old and new. Her music resists what so many labels and critics desire: category. “China is surrounded by a cross-genre cadre of musicians, poised to reinvent the Jazz Vocal archetype for a new age, jettisoning that which is unneeded on her trajectory - taking listeners beyond the known to a universe uniquely her own.”

She will be performing with a group of Classical musicians on the piano, violin, cello, and bass, and this performance will be the perfect Vauxhall Saturday night tonic!

Apollo 5 (a capella vocal ensemble)

A capella vocal ensemble Apollo 5 is a wonder to behold; praised for their powerful singing and distinctive sound. With their unique 5-part vocal arrangements, from the baroque to the present day, they bring originality and freshness to everything they sing. Members of the group have previously given vocal workshops to schools in Vauxhall as part of Classical Vauxhall. Watching them inspire young children to sing and create was a privilege to witness and without getting too sentimental, was enough of a reason to know that what we are doing with Classical Vauxhall is definitely a good thing! Their programme “Haven” features music and poetry of troubled, displaced, and persecuted authors, reflecting music’s capacity to bring comfort, refuge, and sanctuary. This concert is also a fitting celebration of St Mark’s bicentennial year.

Overture Day

In partnership with London Philharmonic Orchestra

We offer Overture Day in partnership with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, for free, to 60 young musicians from Vauxhall and Lambeth. The day consists of fun orchestral skills activities, where participants play alongside LPO musicians, get tips on musicianship, and find out what happens behind the scenes of a professional orchestra. The day will finish with a public performance by the Overture Ensemble.
